Real life story regarding the importance of radioplay: I saw my brother, SIL and his family (2 teenaged boys) this past weekend and we started to discuss AI9, changes, judges, etc. These were people who were big Gokey fans during AI8 (as were my own family). Ugh. I’ve been totally low profile about being a fan of Adam’s, but as we started to discuss what past Idols were doing, my brother and SIL both remarked about how well Adam was doing and that he was all over the radio! They said that he was really talented (although my brother wasn’t sure if his singing style was to his taste, which is cool), and even my nephews agreed (shocker!). To me, this only emphasized the importance of radioplay in maintaining and increasing the popularity of singers, especially those who want to succeed on Top 40.

OT: I’ve noticed a fair bit of angst on MJ’s and elsewhere about Adam playing Malaysia, both because he’s gay and Jewish, and especially after public comments from conservative religious groups there. Personally, I don’t think that there’s any reason to be overly worried (other Western stars have played Malaysia without incident), but perhaps I’m missing something in this case? Are people here concerned about this? I think that things will be cool.

I’m not angsting about Malaysia. They at least play Fever over there, lol. If you want to play there you should respect their culture, plain and simple.

Yup, we can say what we want about new media but radio is still one of the major distributors of pop music. I think it is also important as a seed to other kinds of media distribution (like the internet).
