Big Changes Coming To American Idol

Let’s start with the obvious- yes, JLo, randy, Steven Tyler are confirmed as the new judges, but the great news? NO MORE THEMES. NO MORE MENTORS. And reportedly, original music will be allowed. Jimmy Iovine, the Universal Interscope producer, will serve as the in house mentor and have help by other producers such as Timbaland.

What do you think of the new changes? read the rest here:

I think the Interscope producer and getting Timbaland is an awesome idea. Idol was getting so old with the themes. I hope the contestants get to do more current music.

I love the idea! They need to get with the times and singing Heatwave and Against All Odds just ain’t the waay to do it…..

I am a little nervous about the interscope producer. This kind of mentoring can yield a lot of favoritism, I think. It would be to his advantage to pimp the person he thinks can make the most money for his label. Aaaaaaa, it doesn’t matter anyway, because nothing will change about having successful winners until the text voting is changed.

Yaaay! No more themes or mentors! I always hated the whole mentor idea and it was pretty evident that most of them couldn’t care less about the contestants and were just there to promote themselves. It’s about time that Idol dumped those terrible theme shows, since they were unbelievably dated. I agree that another important change should be to limit the number of votes from any one number (like DWTS and AGT) to eliminate massive spamming, primarily through power text voting. Otherwise, the voting on Idol is a joke and no where near a legitimate representation of the contestants’ popularity.

  5. planetangst ( Studio57) says:

Yeah, the voting is the absolute worst problem. You are never going to have someone from LA or NYC win over the small town people who will vote like crazy for their boy.

Did you hear the brouhaha going on with Crytal and Jive? I guess they were fighting over the releaase date of her album- she wanted it out in Spring they want it this fall, and when someone pointed out to her that the label was saying Fall, she went on a twitter tirade about Jive.

    Nice knowin ya Crystal!

    • fuzzywuzzy1 says:

Yeah, that doesn’t sound good at all. TBH, I was surprised that Crystal was signed by Jive and it sounds like she doesn’t appreciate the reality of what’s involved with being signed by a major label, as someone with a rather modest fanbase from AI (who didn’t win). It would have been much better for Crystal to sign with an independent, smaller label, since maintaining her artistic integrity seems to be the only thing that interests her. She may be mistaken about the level of support that she has, and find herself back where she was before AI if she develops a reputation of being too difficult and unwilling to compromise. She needs to understand the “business” part of being in her position, and badmouthing her label this early in the game is not a smart thing to do.

      • planetangst ( Studio57) says:

I agree. I find it very hard to believe she never watched AI in the last 10 years. Even if that were the case, why would an indie type artist that hates the big machine go on the biggest show in the country? She had to have signed papers detailing what happens if she won or placed in the top 3. She even had an out during the top 10 when she got sick and she begged to stay on the show.

    • jchang365 says:

I don’t know that much about Crystal, but I think she went on the show and get on the tour to earn some money for her son. Like Adam, she also probably went on to get a fanbase (even if it turned out to be a bit small) and exposure, which she would never have sitting at home. While she has that now, the road ahead is not going where she wants it to. :/

The voting is the biggest problem. The rest is cosmetics.

  7. planetangst ( Studio57) says:

The voting is the biggest problem for the fans. The biggest problem for Idol is that they are losing their younger demo. I think these changes might just bring them back.

  8. jtfacts says:

I doubt it–J. Lo and Steven Tyler don’t exactly scream youth appeal to me.

The mentors, other than a few like Adam who actually mentored, were a waste of space so that’s a good change. As is the Interscope guy working with the contestants.

I actually liked the theme nights. Obviously it had nothing to do with success in the recording industry but AI is a tv show and it was entertaining to watch somebody like Adam take on country. The problem with the theme nights was that they were so old and last year they repeated so many. New, less ancient theme nights could still be fun.

With the voting, the show has a problem. I guess there’s a lot of money invested in the AT&T text voting so they aren’t going to give that up. And apparently the voting segment of the audience really, really likes WGWG. How much of the voting segment makes up the watching segment at this point? If the show completely dumps WGWG, are they driving away an audience while not replacing it with anything since once people drop a show they usually don’t come back?

  9. planetangst ( Studio57) says:

Re JLo and Tyler- well they are not gonna get Bieber or Usher, so they are going to have to find someone who has already had their success, just cause they are old doesn’t mean they are stuck in the past. I like the timbaland/ guest producers idea- that is what is going to keep it fresh. Well, I hop- I am kind of excited to see how it pans out, but if it turns out to be the same ole same ole, I’ll probably dump idol for good.
